Charming Chalkboard Sign (Home Decor Contributor)

July 18, 2014 By Ariean Krieger Leave a Comment

Hello Sugar Bee Friends!  It’s Ariean from OneKriegerChick again and I am so excited to be here!

Today, I’m going to show you how to make a Charming Chalkboard Sign…from an old cabinet door.How-to-create-a-charming-sign-from-a-cabinet-door-OneKriegerChick.com

So, You may or may not know that I love to re-purpose old items…typically items bound for the trash.  While perusing a local flea market a few weeks back, I saw a sign made from a cabinet door and knew I needed one.  A fun idea popped into my head to make this project, but where to find a cabinet door…

I put the word out that I was on the hunt for a cabinet door, when lo and behold…my parents neighbor is remodeling his home and there was a stack of them…You guessed it- In his trash pile!

So I loaded a few in the car and brought them home…only to be met with eye rolling from my husband.  Sometimes, he just doesn’t see the potential in my found items…

I washed the door and gave it a rough sanding to help the paint stick.  Chalk paint typically adheres to any surface, sanded or not, but I wasn’t sure about the chalkboard paint.

The door received two coats of DecoArt’s Lace Chalky Finish paint.  I knew I was going for a distressed look, so I didn’t want too many layers of paint to sand through.  If you prefer a less distressed look, three coats will give a smooth, non-distressed look.  I then painted the center with DecoArt’s Black Chalkboard paint.  I ended up painting four thin coats on the chalkboard, but they dried really quickly.

distressing painted wood

Here’s the difference between distressing and leaving the painted wood.  For the distressed look, I used a sanding block to sand over any section of the door where I wanted the wood to peek through.

You see those little holes where the handle used to be?  Well, I didn’t fill them in before painting and they didn’t look that great once they were sanded.  They showed up a little more than I thought they would.  So, I just drilled a couple more matching holes on the other side.  Perfect for hanging the sign!

I ran a fun ribbon (found at Hobby Lobby) through the holes, tying a knot in the back, and hung it from the light fixture on my front door.  Charming, huh!

Write a greeting like Welcome…or I really wanted to write “Enter at Your Own Risk” because my house looked like a tornado had just spun through and my boys were being particularly ornery!

Or, turn it into an Established Sign.  For the Established Sign, I wanted the lettering to be a bit more prominent or noticeable.  I sketched the lettering on with a piece of chalk and went over it with a chalkboard marker to create more precise lines.
