Harry Potter Custom Applique Tee (and giveaway)!

July 21, 2014 By Mandy Beyeler 24 Comments

Calling all Harry Potter fans!  Have you read the books – watched the movies – loved it all?!  I have a fun craft for you today, a Harry Potter Custom Applique Tee – I really love how this came out.  My daughter is right in the middle of the series (love to watch their excitement when they start reading it) and so I wanted a shirt that was a little girly but not over-the-top.  This could easy be made in a boy version – just switch out fabric choices.  And there’s a no-sew option!!

See, super cute, right?!  And it’s a pretty simple thing to make – I’m here to walk you through it.  You can do this!  It’s part of the Happy Harry Potter Series over at Rae Gun Ramblings – be sure to head over there for lots more Harry Potter craft ideas.  If you like pinteresty images, here ya go for that:

Harry Potter custom tee tshirt     make a harry potter tshirt

Alrighty, let’s get started.  You will need:

–shirt

–Harry Potter Logo (I just printed one off)

–Heat n Bond, Wonder Under, etc

114b

First cut out the logo.  Then trace around it on the paper side of the Heat n Bond.  Be sure to trace it on backwards, as shown:

Then iron that whole piece onto the back of the fabric you want to use for the applique:

Then carefully cut along your lines, through the fabric and the attached Heat n Bond:

After it’s all cut out, peel the backing off.  It will leave a glue residue on the back of the fabric – that’s just what you want:

118 copy

Put the fabric cutout onto the shirt, and iron it into place.  The ironing will melt the glue and adhere the fabric to the shirt.

119 copy

You can be done at that point.  The glue is enough to hold the logo on.  So if you want no-sew, you’re good to go.  I think it looks a little nicer when the edges of the design are stitched around, so I went ahead and did that.  Just go slow – you can do it:

An up-close view of the stitching outline:

Wear and enjoy!!  If you’re wondering about the super-awesome necklace she’s wearing, it’s from Pieces by Polly – isn’t it the cutest?!  She also sent us a custom letter from Hogwarts – so so cool – if you have a kiddo who loves Harry Potter books, be sure to check out her shop.

My daughter just recently became interested in the Harry Potter books after going to a HP themed birthday party for a friend. It’s so fun watching her discover all the fun magical things from the first book 🙂
