Think outside the box – outside the Valentine Box! Instead of a box for collecting valentine’s , how about a bucket? We had tons of empty paint cans, and I knew they would make a super fun valentine “box” – and so I whipped up an Upcycle Valentine Bucket. I loved this idea for the using Valentine’s Day with Plaid Crafts.
I just love how it came out – fun and bright and awesome, and all starting with an old paint can.
So first, of course you’ll need an old paint can. I didn’t clean it out because it’s dry, so wet paint isn’t a worry. If you don’t have an old paint can, you can buy paint buckets made specifically for crafting at craft stores.
Then I peeled the label off. There were a few paint drips left on the can, but I liked the feel they game and left them on the can – you can scrape them off if you’d like. Then I sprayed the can with a white – or a primer – so that the color would show up a little better.
So go ahead and grab those supplies – primed paint bucket, Plaid Craft paints, and then for the heart I used Mod Podge Collage Clay. And then I used a foam paint brush for application, and hot glue to attach the heart.
For the heart, I loved the idea of a stand-out attachment instead of painting it on. I used the collage clay by drawing a heart on parchment paper, then filled it in with the clay. It’s kind of a thick icing consistency.
While the heart was drying, I moved on to the bucket. I freehanded the stripes, but you can tape them off if you prefer. I liked the handmade look that came with the freehand style. I painted every other stripe and let those dry and then went back and painted the other stripes.
I used 3 main colors then topped it in pink, to match the heart that would be in pink.
And speaking of the heart, when it dried I was able to paint it – I love the texture and 3D aspect it adds to the bucket.
I used hot glue to attach the heart. And that’s it – your bucket is finished, and ready to be filled with all those awesome Valentines!
It’s simple enough that a kiddo can make it themselves for their school valentine party. And there’s so much room for creativity and personalization – it’s up to you and whatever your mind can create to decorate your bucket!
